What nickname is commonly given to Nanga Parbat?

The story behind the answer

“Killer Mountain” is the common nickname for Nanga Parbat.

Nanga Parbat is an 8,126-metre peak in Pakistan’s western Himalayas and is the world’s ninth-highest mountain. Its nickname reflects the mountain’s severe climbing history, especially the many deaths recorded on expeditions before its first successful ascent.

The first ascent was achieved in 1953 by Austrian climber Hermann Buhl, who climbed alone from the high camp after his companions turned back. His ascent was especially notable because he completed it without supplemental oxygen and remained on the summit after dark.

The name Nanga Parbat comes from Sanskrit and is commonly translated as “naked mountain,” referring to its prominent, isolated appearance. It is sometimes confused with K2’s nickname, “the Savage Mountain,” but those are different peaks.
