What NHL team did Wayne Gretzky win his first Stanley Cup with?
Answer
Edmonton Oilers
Answer
Edmonton Oilers
Wayne Gretzky won his first Stanley Cup with the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers defeated the New York Islanders in the 1984 Stanley Cup Final, winning the series four games to one.
The championship was Edmonton’s first Stanley Cup and Gretzky’s first as an NHL player. The Oilers had lost to the Islanders in the 1983 Final, but returned the following year as a faster, younger team led by Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey, and Grant Fuhr. Edmonton clinched the title at home with a 5–2 victory in Game 5.
Gretzky went on to win four Stanley Cups with Edmonton: 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988. He was traded to the Los Angeles Kings shortly after the 1988 championship, so he never won the Cup with Los Angeles, the St. Louis Blues, or the New York Rangers. The Oilers’ 1984 victory began one of the NHL’s great dynasties.
