What NFL championship trophy has been made by Tiffany & Co. since 1967?

The story behind the answer

The Vince Lombardi Trophy has been made by Tiffany & Co. since the first Super Bowl in 1967.

The trophy was created for the NFL championship game after a 1966 lunch involving NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle and Tiffany vice president Oscar Riedner. Riedner reportedly sketched the design on a cocktail napkin: a football in a kicking position atop a three-sided stand. Tiffany produced the original in Newark, New Jersey, and later trophies were handcrafted at company facilities in New Jersey and Rhode Island.

The first trophy was awarded to the Green Bay Packers after Super Bowl I on January 15, 1967. It originally carried the inscription “World Professional Football Championship.” After Packers coach Vince Lombardi died in 1970, the award was officially renamed in his honor and first presented under its new name after Super Bowl V.

“Lombardi Trophy” is a perfectly acceptable short form, but “Super Bowl trophy” is descriptive rather than the canonical name. Each year’s trophy is newly made, and the winning team keeps it permanently. It is sterling silver, about 22 inches tall, and weighs roughly seven pounds.
