Answer
Chrystie Street Connection
Answer
Chrystie Street Connection
The Chrystie Street Connection opened in 1967 and linked the New York City Subway’s BMT and IND divisions.
The connection runs beneath Chrystie Street in Manhattan and includes tracks joining the IND Sixth Avenue Line with former BMT routes over the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges. Its opening was one of the largest changes to the subway’s operating pattern since the system’s unification.
The first phase opened on November 26, 1967. It allowed services from Brooklyn and Queens to reach the Sixth Avenue Line and introduced major route changes, including the B and D services using the new connection. The project also included the Grand Street station.
The Chrystie Street Connection is not itself a complete subway line. It is a set of connecting tracks and infrastructure that permits trains from formerly separate divisions to share routes.
