What New Mexico village did Georgia O'Keeffe make her home after buying a house there in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe made Abiquiu, New Mexico, her home after buying a house there in 1945.

The property was a traditional adobe compound that included a distinctive courtyard wall and a door. O'Keeffe had noticed the site years earlier but could not initially obtain it. After acquiring the house, she restored it and used it as a residence and studio. The surrounding landscape became a recurring subject in her paintings.

Abiquiu differed from Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also maintained a home. Ghost Ranch provided a more open, remote setting, while the Abiquiu house offered a village environment and architectural motifs. The door in the Abiquiu compound became one of her best-known recurring subjects.

The village is north of Santa Fe in Rio Arriba County. It is often confused with Taos because both are associated with New Mexico’s artistic history, but O'Keeffe’s principal New Mexico homes were at Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch.
