Abiquiu became Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico home after she left New York.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly for many years. She eventually bought and restored a house in Abiquiu, a historic village north of Santa Fe, and moved there permanently in 1949. The house and its surrounding landscape became important parts of her daily life and artistic practice.
Her Abiquiu home is especially associated with a courtyard wall and a black door that she painted repeatedly. The structure was not merely a studio setting; it was an architectural subject that she transformed through changes in viewpoint, light, and composition.
Abiquiu is often mixed up with Ghost Ranch. Ghost Ranch was the nearby landscape where O'Keeffe also lived and worked, while Abiquiu was the village containing her famous restored residence. Both locations are central to understanding her New Mexico period.
