Georgia O'Keeffe bought her adobe house in Abiquiú, New Mexico, in 1945. The property, known as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio, became one of the most important places in her later life and work.
The house had been abandoned for years when O'Keeffe discovered it. She was drawn to a courtyard wall with a distinctive door, which became the subject of several paintings. Architect Juan Hamilton helped restore and adapt the property for her use.
O'Keeffe divided her time between Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch for many years. The house provided a more settled base than the remote ranch landscape, while still placing her near the scenery that inspired her.
Abiquiú is sometimes confused with Santa Fe because the O'Keeffe Museum is located in Santa Fe. The house itself is in Abiquiú, about an hour north of Santa Fe, and is now preserved as a historic site.
