Abiquiú became Georgia O’Keeffe’s main New Mexico home from 1949.
O’Keeffe moved permanently from New York to New Mexico in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz’s death. She lived and worked at a house in Abiquiú, where a high adobe wall and a distinctive door became recurring subjects in her paintings.
She also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, a dramatic landscape north of Abiquiú. The two places are related but not interchangeable: Ghost Ranch supplied broad desert scenery, while Abiquiú was her settled home and studio base.
O’Keeffe’s Abiquiú house is now associated with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Its architecture, courtyard, and surrounding landscape offer important context for understanding the repeated doors, walls, hills, and bones in her work.
