What New Mexico region became Georgia O'Keeffe's longtime home and subject?

The story behind the answer

Ghost Ranch became one of Georgia O'Keeffe’s most important homes and subjects in New Mexico. She first visited the area in the 1930s and later maintained a house there, drawn by its dramatic cliffs, arid colors, and expansive skies.

The ranch lies near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe repeatedly painted its geological formations, including the cliffs and hills that surrounded her. The landscape offered a powerful alternative to the urban settings associated with much of her earlier career.

Ghost Ranch is not the same place as O'Keeffe’s Abiquiú house. She lived and worked in both locations, but the ranch is especially associated with the red cliffs and broad vistas visible in many New Mexico paintings. The area is now a retreat and education center and remains closely connected with O'Keeffe’s legacy.
