Answer
Ghost Ranch
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Georgia O'Keeffe began visiting Ghost Ranch in 1934.
Ghost Ranch is a retreat and former dude ranch in northern New Mexico, near Abiquiú, that became one of O'Keeffe's most important sources of subject matter. She first visited in 1934 and returned repeatedly to paint the cliffs, mesas, arroyos, and changing light. The area's red and yellow rock formations became closely associated with her mature New Mexico work.
Ghost Ranch and O'Keeffe's Abiquiú home are related but not identical places. She acquired the Abiquiú house later, while Ghost Ranch was the landscape setting that supplied many of the forms she painted. She eventually purchased a small house at Ghost Ranch in 1940, although she later chose to live primarily at Abiquiú.
Her paintings of the ranch were not simple topographical records. O'Keeffe isolated cliffs, bones, doors, and fragments, often presenting them at unusual scales or from unexpected viewpoints. This approach made the landscape feel both intensely specific and broadly symbolic, while remaining rooted in the geography of northern New Mexico.
