Ghost Ranch became one of Georgia O’Keeffe’s homes in New Mexico.

Located near Abiquiú, Ghost Ranch is a dramatic landscape of red cliffs, mesas, and open valleys. O’Keeffe first visited the area in the 1930s and later rented a small house there. She used the surrounding terrain as a major source for paintings and drawings, especially after moving permanently to New Mexico.

The ranch had been developed by Arthur Newton Pack and his wife, Phoebe, who established it as a retreat and educational center. Today it is associated with the Presbyterian Church and welcomes visitors, students, and researchers.

O’Keeffe also owned and restored a house in the village of Abiquiú. Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú are distinct places, although both are strongly connected with her New Mexico life. Her paintings of the Pedernal and nearby cliffs helped make the area internationally recognizable.
