Georgia O’Keeffe purchased the Abiquiú house in 1945 and made it her home and studio.
The Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio is in Abiquiú, New Mexico, about 53 miles north of Santa Fe. O’Keeffe bought the historic adobe property in 1945 after renting it for several years and spent substantial time restoring it.
The building became one of her most important working environments. Its courtyard wall, black door, and surrounding adobe forms appear in numerous paintings and photographs. The house connected her daily life directly to the architecture and landscape she repeatedly observed.
Ghost Ranch is a different New Mexico property associated with O’Keeffe. She began renting a house there in the 1930s and later owned land nearby, but the Abiquiú property was the house she purchased in 1945 and used as her principal home and studio. The site is now preserved as a National Trust historic property.
