What New Mexico property became Georgia O'Keeffe’s best-known home and studio near Abiquiú?
Answer
Abiquiú Home and Studio
Answer
Abiquiú Home and Studio
Georgia O'Keeffe’s best-known home and studio near Abiquiú is the Abiquiú Home and Studio.
O'Keeffe acquired the abandoned adobe house in Abiquiú, New Mexico, in 1945 and had it restored before moving in during the late 1940s. The property became her principal home and workplace after she settled permanently in New Mexico. Its courtyard wall and distinctive black door appear in several of her paintings.
The house is different from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico place closely associated with O'Keeffe. She owned a house at Ghost Ranch and spent time there, but the Abiquiú property was her more permanent base in later life.
The Abiquiú Home and Studio is now preserved by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Its architecture, gardens, and surrounding landscape help explain why doors, walls, and adobe forms became recurring motifs in her work.
