What New Mexico place became Georgia O’Keeffe’s main home and studio from 1949?

The story behind the answer

Abiquiú became Georgia O’Keeffe’s main New Mexico home and studio from 1949.

O’Keeffe moved into the historic adobe house in Abiquiú after years of spending part of each year in New Mexico. She had been drawn to the region since her first visit in 1929, and the surrounding landscape supplied recurring subjects, including cliffs, doors, bones, hills, and broad skies.

The Abiquiú home was built around a courtyard and included a famous black door that O’Keeffe painted repeatedly. The house gave her a permanent base near the landscapes she had long explored, while her nearby Ghost Ranch property remained another important source of imagery.

Abiquiú is often confused with Santa Fe because O’Keeffe is strongly associated with that city and died there. Her museum is in Santa Fe, but her principal New Mexico home and studio was in Abiquiú.
