What New Mexico home did Georgia O'Keeffe restore and use as a studio?
Answer
Abiquiu home
Answer
Abiquiu home
Georgia O'Keeffe restored and used the Abiquiu home as her New Mexico residence and studio.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is in Abiquiu, New Mexico. O'Keeffe first saw the abandoned adobe compound in 1935 and became fascinated by its wall, courtyard, and distinctive door. She eventually acquired the property and had it restored, turning it into a home and a place to work.
The famous black door in the compound became a recurring subject in her paintings. O'Keeffe said the door was one of the things she had to paint repeatedly before she felt she could leave it alone. The building therefore connects a real architectural feature with a sustained artistic meditation on shape, shadow, and memory.
The Abiquiu property differs from Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also spent extensive time. Ghost Ranch was a larger landscape area north of Abiquiu; the home and studio was her personal residence in the village. The National Trust for Historic Preservation later recognized the property as a National Historic Landmark.
