What New Mexico home did Georgia O'Keeffe purchase in 1945 and later make her year-round residence?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe purchased the Abiquiu house in 1945 and later made it her year-round residence.

The property is the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico. O'Keeffe first encountered the abandoned adobe house in the 1930s and was drawn to its courtyard wall and distinctive black door. She bought it in 1945 and had the structure restored with architect Juan Hamilton.

The Abiquiu house became both a home and a working environment. Its architecture, courtyard, door, and surrounding landscape appear repeatedly in O'Keeffe’s paintings and photographs. She moved there permanently in 1984, after spending many years dividing her time between New Mexico locations and New York.

Ghost Ranch was another important residence and source of subjects, but it was not the house purchased in 1945. The property is now preserved as a historic site.
