What New Mexico home did Georgia O'Keeffe acquire in 1945?
Answer
The Abiquiú house
Answer
The Abiquiú house
Georgia O'Keeffe acquired the Abiquiú house in 1945.
The adobe house in Abiquiú, New Mexico, had been abandoned and was in poor condition when O'Keeffe first noticed it. She later bought it and supervised its restoration, turning it into a private home and studio. The property became one of the most important physical settings of her later life and work.
A distinctive black door opening onto a courtyard wall became a recurring subject in her paintings. O'Keeffe repeatedly studied the same architectural feature, showing how sustained attention to one place could generate many different compositions.
The Abiquiú house should not be confused with Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location closely associated with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was a separate retreat and source of subjects; the Abiquiú property was her principal home and studio from the mid-1940s.
