Georgia O'Keeffe restored the Abiquiú house and made it her principal residence. The historic adobe home stands in Abiquiú, New Mexico, and became one of the places most closely associated with her mature life and work.
O'Keeffe first noticed the property during drives through the area and later purchased it in 1945. The house required extensive repairs, but she worked with architect Juan Hamilton to restore it. Its courtyard, doors, walls, and surrounding landscape became recurring elements in her paintings and photographs.
The Abiquiú house is distinct from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location that inspired many of O'Keeffe's paintings. Ghost Ranch was a dramatic rural retreat, while the Abiquiú property functioned as her settled home and studio environment. The building is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio, administered by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and open through scheduled tours.
