What name does J.R.R. Tolkien give to the tree-like race in Middle-earth?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien calls the tree-like race in Middle-earth the Ents.

Ents are ancient shepherds of trees who appear most prominently in The Two Towers. Their name comes from the Old English word ent, meaning a giant or creature. The best-known Ent is Treebeard, also called Fangorn, who meets Merry and Pippin in Fangorn Forest.

The Ents gather at an Entmoot and eventually march against Isengard after learning how Saruman’s industry has damaged the forests. Their attack helps destroy Saruman’s power base. Tolkien presents them as slow-speaking, ancient beings whose long perspective contrasts with the haste of many human characters.

Huorns are related tree-like beings, but Tolkien distinguishes them from the Ents. Huorns are more mysterious and may be trees that have become sentient or Ent-like. This makes “tree people” an imprecise description: Ents are a specific race with their own language, history, and guardianship of forests.
