J.R.R. Tolkien gives the name Quenya to the language spoken by many High Elves in Middle-earth.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s most fully developed constructed languages. He based much of its sound and structure on Finnish, while also drawing on his knowledge of Latin, Greek and other languages. In the fictional history, Quenya is associated especially with the Elves of Valinor and with formal or ceremonial speech.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language and was more commonly spoken by Elves in much of Middle-earth during the events of The Lord of the Rings. The two names are therefore easy to confuse, but they refer to different languages with different historical roles.
Tolkien did not invent isolated words only for atmosphere. He created related languages, writing systems and histories, making language a core part of Middle-earth’s design.
