What is the name of the fictional land where Frodo Baggins lives at the start of The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Frodo Baggins lives in the fictional land called the Shire at the start of The Lord of the Rings.

The Shire is a peaceful region in northwestern Middle-earth inhabited mainly by Hobbits. It contains four traditional divisions, or Farthings, and includes well-known places such as Hobbiton, Bywater, and the Tookland.

Frodo begins his journey in Hobbiton, where he inherits Bag End from Bilbo Baggins. After learning that Bilbo’s ring is the One Ring, Frodo leaves the Shire with Samwise Gamgee and later meets Merry and Pippin on the road.

The Shire is sometimes confused with Hobbiton. Hobbiton is a village within the Shire, while the Shire is the larger country. Tolkien modeled aspects of the Shire on the English countryside, especially the rural landscapes and communities he knew in the Midlands.
