What name did the 2017 merger of Dow Chemical and DuPont produce?
Answer
DowDuPont
Answer
DowDuPont
The 2017 merger of Dow Chemical and DuPont produced the company DowDuPont.
Dow Chemical and DuPont announced their planned merger in December 2015. After regulatory reviews and shareholder approval, the transaction closed on August 31, 2017. The combined business was intended to operate as a temporary holding company before being divided into three independent public companies.
Those planned businesses focused on agriculture, materials science and specialty products. The agriculture business became Corteva, the materials science business became Dow, and the specialty-products business became DuPont. The separations were completed in 2019.
DowDuPont therefore was not intended to remain a permanent operating name. It is also distinct from the modern Dow company, which emerged from the breakup, and from DuPont, which continued as a separate specialty-products company after the restructuring.
