McDonald’s used Speedee as its mascot before Ronald McDonald became the brand’s best-known character.
Speedee was a chef character introduced in 1948, when Richard and Maurice McDonald reorganized their restaurant around the “Speedee Service System.” The mascot’s name highlighted the brothers’ emphasis on fast, standardized food preparation.
The character was often shown with a hamburger-shaped head and a chef’s appearance. This early identity connected the restaurant’s visual branding directly to its speed-focused operating model.
Ronald McDonald did not replace Speedee immediately in every context, but he eventually became the dominant advertising figure. Speedee is therefore sometimes confused with later McDonaldland characters, although those characters belonged to a different advertising era.
