What name did J.K. Rowling give the fictional sport played on broomsticks in Harry Potter?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling named the fictional broomstick sport in Harry Potter Quidditch.

Quidditch is played by two teams of seven players who fly on broomsticks. Each team has three Chasers, two Beaters, one Keeper, and one Seeker. The players use several balls: a Quaffle, two Bludgers, and a Golden Snitch.

In the novels, scoring a goal with the Quaffle earns 10 points, while catching the Golden Snitch earns 150 points and usually ends the match. The sport became one of the series’ most recognizable inventions and inspired real-world ground-based games played at universities and clubs.

Quidditch is sometimes confused with other wizarding games. Gobstones is a separate magical game, Wizard’s Chess is a chess variant, and the Bludger is one ball used within Quidditch rather than the sport’s name.
