Georgia O'Keeffe often worked at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico.
Ghost Ranch is a retreat and landscape area near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe visited the area from the late 1920s and painted its cliffs, mesas, bones, and intensely colored formations for many years.
The landscape became one of the defining environments of her art. She famously described a particular red-and-gray hill at Ghost Ranch as a private subject that repeatedly drew her attention. Her paintings did not simply document the scenery; they isolated and reshaped forms to create bold compositions.
Ghost Ranch is distinct from O'Keeffe's house and studio in Abiquiú. Both places are connected with her New Mexico career, but Ghost Ranch refers to the larger landscape and ranch setting that supplied many of her subjects.
