General Motors gave its modular battery and electric-vehicle platform the name Ultium.
GM announced Ultium in 2020 as a family of battery cells, battery packs and vehicle technologies intended for a wide range of electric vehicles. The system was designed to support different cell formats, capacities and vehicle layouts rather than one fixed battery configuration.
Ultium technology was planned for vehicles across GM brands, including Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC. Its flexible architecture was intended to allow front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive applications, depending on the vehicle.
Ultium is sometimes confused with a single battery chemistry or one specific car. It is a broader technology platform. GM has used the name in connection with batteries, electric propulsion and related manufacturing plans, while individual vehicles can have different pack sizes and performance specifications.
