What music streaming service was the predecessor to TikTok Music?

The story behind the answer

Resso was the music streaming service that preceded TikTok Music.

Resso was developed by ByteDance before the company introduced TikTok Music. It operated in markets including India, Brazil, and Indonesia and offered a music-streaming experience connected to social features. In July 2023, TikTok Music launched first in Brazil and Indonesia, replacing Resso in those markets; Resso was not available in India at that point because the app had been banned there.

TikTok Music was designed to connect music discovery with TikTok’s short-video ecosystem. Users could stream and download songs, share tracks, and move between music listening and TikTok-related discovery. The service later expanded through closed and public launches in markets such as Australia, Mexico, and Singapore.

The distinction matters because Resso was not simply another competing service such as Spotify or Deezer. It was ByteDance’s own predecessor product. TikTok Music itself was short-lived: ByteDance shut it down in November 2024, making Resso the correct historical answer to the predecessor question.
