Punk'd premiered on MTV in 2003 and was created by Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg. Kutcher hosted the original run and served as a producer. The hidden-camera format staged elaborate situations that convinced celebrities they were facing crises, embarrassing surprises, or bizarre encounters before revealing the prank.
The series grew from an earlier concept called Harassment, which was intended to prank ordinary people. After a fake-dead-body stunt caused legal trouble, the idea was reworked around celebrity targets. Among the show's best-known pranks was one in which Justin Timberlake was led to believe government agents were seizing his home and belongings over unpaid taxes.
Punk'd originally ran on MTV from 2003 to 2007, then returned in later revivals with different hosts and guest presenters. “Punk'd” became a pop-culture verb meaning that someone had been fooled by a practical joke.
