Korvatunturi is traditionally said to be the home of Santa Claus in Finnish folklore.
Korvatunturi is a fell in Finnish Lapland near the Russian border. Its Finnish name means “Ear Fell,” referring to the mountain’s distinctive shape. Folklore associates the mountain with Santa Claus, or Joulupukki, and says that its ear-like form helps him hear children around the world.
The mountain lies in a remote border area, so Santa-related tourism is more strongly associated with Rovaniemi. Rovaniemi promotes itself as Santa Claus’s official hometown and is home to Santa Claus Village, while Korvatunturi remains the traditional folkloric residence.
These two locations are therefore easy to confuse. Rovaniemi is the principal visitor destination, but Korvatunturi is the mountain named in the Finnish story. The distinction reflects the difference between a modern tourism center and an older folklore setting.
