A minimum net worth of $1 billion qualifies someone for Forbes’ World’s Billionaires list.
Forbes uses the billion-dollar threshold to define the group it ranks. The estimate is calculated in U.S. dollars and generally reflects assets such as public-company shares, private businesses, real estate, cash and investments, minus known debts. Reaching the threshold does not mean that the person has one billion dollars sitting in a bank account.
The list is a snapshot rather than a permanent status. Share prices can move sharply, private-company valuations can be revised, and exchange rates can change the dollar value of assets. As a result, someone can enter or leave the ranking between annual editions or even during a market day.
This threshold applies to the World’s Billionaires list, not every Forbes wealth ranking. The Forbes 400, for example, ranks wealthy Americans and has its own cutoff, while celebrity and industry lists use separate selection methods.
