The McDLT
Answer
The McDLT
The mid-1980s McDonald’s item that came in a double container was the McDLT.
The McDLT was designed around a simple idea: keep the hot side hot and the cool side cool. The beef patty and bottom bun were placed in one compartment, while the top bun, lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles, and sauces occupied the other. Customers assembled the sandwich by combining the two sides just before eating.
McDonald’s introduced the sandwich in the mid-1980s, with the product becoming especially associated with 1984 and 1985. Its name stood for “McDonald’s Lettuce and Tomato.” The unusual packaging was a wide, two-sided polystyrene container, much larger than a typical burger box.
The McDLT became famous partly because of its memorable advertising, including a commercial featuring Jason Alexander. However, the bulky packaging created storage and preparation problems, while growing environmental criticism targeted McDonald’s use of foam containers. The sandwich was discontinued around 1991. It is sometimes confused with the McLean Deluxe, a later lower-fat burger, but only the McDLT used this signature hot-and-cold split container.
