McDonald's introduced the Happy Meal nationally in the United States in 1979.
The Happy Meal combined a child-sized meal with a toy and distinctive package design. Its branding gave McDonald's a dedicated product aimed at families and made the packaging itself part of the dining experience.
The product had been tested in selected markets before its national rollout. Early Happy Meals used a box styled around a circus theme, helping distinguish the offering from an ordinary hamburger meal. Toys and later licensed promotions became central to its long-running identity.
The Happy Meal is sometimes mistaken for McDonaldland, the fictional advertising world created around the same period. McDonaldland was a character universe, while the Happy Meal was a packaged menu product. Their family-oriented marketing often appeared together, but they are separate parts of McDonald's branding history.
