Ronald McDonald appeared on McDonald's first Ronald McDonald birthday club television commercial in 1963.
The commercial helped establish Ronald as more than a one-off clown in a local advertisement. It presented him as a repeatable character who could anchor children's promotions, birthday messaging, and broader restaurant branding.
Ronald's early television appearances came before the complete McDonaldland universe had been established. Later campaigns added characters such as the Hamburglar, Grimace, and Mayor McCheese, giving McDonald's advertising a larger cast and a shared fictional setting.
The birthday-club format also illustrates how McDonald's connected branding with customer relationships. Rather than advertising only a menu item, the company used a named mascot and a celebratory occasion to encourage children and families to identify with the restaurant.
