“I’m Lovin’ It” became McDonald’s global tagline after its introduction in 2003.
The campaign was launched internationally as a major effort to give McDonald’s a consistent modern voice across markets. Its wording used an informal present-participial phrase designed to sound conversational and upbeat rather than formal or corporate.
The campaign is also associated with a distinctive five-note musical hook, often called the “ba da ba ba ba” melody. The phrase and melody were adapted across countries, languages, television commercials, packaging, and in-store materials.
It replaced earlier McDonald’s slogans such as “You Deserve a Break Today,” which had been prominent in the 1970s. “I’m Lovin’ It” is sometimes written with a straight apostrophe in plain text, but the wording remains the same.
