Cosmatesque is a medieval Italian decorative technique that arranges small pieces of colored marble and stone into geometric patterns. The chapel’s floor uses this style in bands, circles and other carefully ordered designs, creating a strong visual path through the interior.

The technique is associated with the Cosmati marble-working families of Rome, active chiefly from the twelfth to the thirteenth centuries. It predates the Renaissance fresco campaign that transformed the chapel’s walls and ceiling.

Visitors sometimes focus only on Michelangelo’s ceiling and overlook the floor. Yet the pavement is part of the chapel’s older architectural and liturgical fabric. Its patterns also help organize the space around the central area and the sanctuary, linking decoration with movement and ceremony.
