McDonald's used Speedee as an early mascot before Ronald McDonald became its famous clown mascot.
Speedee was a chef-like character associated with the McDonald brothers' original Speedee Service System. The design reflected the restaurant's emphasis on fast, standardized food preparation rather than the family-oriented fantasy world used in later advertising.
Ronald McDonald was introduced in 1963 and gradually became the company's best-known character. Speedee therefore belongs mainly to McDonald's early branding history, when the business was promoting speed as its central advantage.
Speedee is sometimes confused with later McDonald's characters such as Grimace or the Hamburglar, but those figures were created for the expanded McDonaldland advertising campaign. Speedee's role was earlier and more closely tied to the restaurant's service system.
