What mascot appeared on McDonald’s first logo, before the Golden Arches?

The story behind the answer

Speedee appeared on McDonald’s first logo before the Golden Arches became the company’s dominant symbol.

The character represented the fast-service promise of the McDonald brothers’ original restaurant system. His name referred to speed, an important part of the restaurant’s identity after the brothers reorganized their San Bernardino operation around a simplified, rapid-service menu in 1948.

Speedee is often confused with later McDonald’s characters. Ronald McDonald became the best-known mascot in the 1960s, while the Hamburglar and Grimace were introduced as part of the later McDonaldland advertising world. None of those characters belonged to the earliest logo.

The Golden Arches eventually replaced Speedee in the company’s visual identity. That change shifted McDonald’s branding away from a character-based emblem and toward an architectural symbol that could work on signs, packaging, advertisements, and restaurants worldwide.
