Quentin Tarantino worked at Video Archives, a Manhattan Beach video store, before his film career took off.
The store was owned and managed by Lance Lawson and Rick Humbert. Tarantino worked there for about five years and became known for his encyclopedic film knowledge and recommendations. Future filmmaker Roger Avary and writer Daniel Snyder also worked there.
Video Archives functioned as an informal film school. Tarantino and Avary held long discussions about movies with employees and customers, experiences that helped shape Tarantino’s cinematic tastes and later filmmaking style. The store eventually moved to nearby Hermosa Beach and closed in 1995.
A common mix-up is confusing Video Archives with Vidiots or other famous video-rental chains. After the store closed, Tarantino bought its inventory and kept it at home. The name later inspired The Video Archives Podcast, launched by Tarantino and Avary in 2022.
