What magical sport did J.K. Rowling create for the Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling created Quidditch as the magical sport in the Harry Potter series.

Quidditch is played by two teams riding flying broomsticks. In the books, each team has seven players: three Chasers, two Beaters, one Keeper, and one Seeker. Players score with the Quaffle, while Beaters use bats to redirect Bludgers.

The Golden Snitch is worth 150 points when caught, and catching it usually ends the match. The team with the higher score wins, so a team can sometimes lose even when its Seeker catches the Snitch. Harry plays Seeker for Gryffindor.

The name and rules are fictional, but real-world university students later created Muggle Quidditch, now commonly called quadball. That sport adapted the game for non-magical players and developed its own rules and equipment.
