What is the name of the London railway station where J.K. Rowling placed the magical entrance to Platform 9¾?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling placed the magical entrance to Platform 9¾ at King's Cross Station in London.

In the Harry Potter books, young witches and wizards reach the Hogwarts Express by passing through the barrier between platforms 9 and 10. King's Cross is the departure point for the train to Hogwarts and becomes an important recurring location in the series.

The real station has platforms 9 and 10 separated by tracks, so the exact book description does not correspond neatly to a single visible barrier. A commemorative Platform 9¾ trolley installation was later created for visitors. St Pancras International, the neighboring station, is also associated with the films because its Gothic exterior appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
