What magical school did J.K. Rowling create as the main setting for Harry Potter’s education?

The story behind the answer

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the magical school J.K. Rowling created as the main setting for Harry Potter’s education.

Hogwarts is a fictional boarding school in Scotland. Harry begins attending at age eleven, and most of the main series follows his lessons, friendships, rivalries, and adventures there. The school is divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.

Other wizarding schools appear in the wider fictional world. Beauxbatons is associated with France, Durmstrang is associated with northern Europe, and Ilvermorny is located in North America. Those institutions are important to the expanded setting, but Hogwarts remains the central school in the seven main novels. Its castle, grounds, moving staircases, Great Hall, and house system became some of the most recognizable elements of Rowling’s wizarding world.
