McDonald’s Golden Arches logo visually formed the letter “M” when its two arches were joined.
The mark developed from the large arches incorporated into McDonald’s restaurant architecture. When the two curved elements were combined in graphic form, they created a simple, bold silhouette that also suggested the first letter of McDonald’s name.
That combination made the symbol easy to recognize at a distance and adaptable to signs, packaging, uniforms, advertising, and restaurant design. The arches became more than a decorative building feature: they became a shorthand for the entire company.
The letter is sometimes mistaken for a purely abstract pair of arches because the logo’s shape does not look exactly like a standard printed capital M. Its historical significance comes from both readings: it is an “M” for McDonald’s and a stylized version of the restaurant’s architectural arches.
