What Led Zeppelin album featured "Stairway to Heaven"?

The story behind the answer

Led Zeppelin IV featured “Stairway to Heaven.” The album is officially untitled, but it is most commonly called Led Zeppelin IV because it was the band's fourth studio album.

Released by Atlantic Records on November 8, 1971, the record was produced by guitarist Jimmy Page and recorded largely at the country house Headley Grange. “Stairway to Heaven” became its signature track, combining acoustic guitar, recorders, electric instrumentation, Robert Plant's vocals, and Page's famous guitar solo in a gradual eight-minute build.

The album's unusual cover contains no conventional title or band name. Instead, each member selected a symbol, which led some listeners to call it “Four Symbols” or “ZoSo.” Despite its unnamed packaging, the album became one of the best-known and best-selling records in rock history. Other tracks include “Black Dog,” “Rock and Roll,” and “When the Levee Breaks.”

A frequent misconception is that “Stairway to Heaven” was a standard commercial single. Atlantic reportedly wanted to release it as one, but manager Peter Grant refused, so listeners generally encountered the song as part of the album rather than as a conventional US single.
