Ghost Ranch became one of Georgia O'Keeffe's best-known sources of New Mexico landscapes.
Ghost Ranch is a retreat and education center near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe began visiting the area in 1934 and rented a house there for many years. Its dramatic cliffs, red earth, and broad views appeared repeatedly in her paintings and drawings.
The landscape around Ghost Ranch helped define the public image of O'Keeffe's New Mexico period. She often worked outdoors, isolating geological forms and revisiting the same places from different viewpoints. Her art made the region internationally recognizable, although the paintings are artistic interpretations rather than topographic records.
Ghost Ranch is sometimes confused with O'Keeffe's Abiquiú Home and Studio. They are separate properties: Ghost Ranch was her remote northern retreat, while the Abiquiú house became her principal home and studio. Both remain essential to understanding her work in New Mexico.
