What large monolith in Niger State, Nigeria, is often called the 'Gateway to Abuja'?

The story behind the answer

The large monolith in Niger State, Nigeria, often called the “Gateway to Abuja,” is Zuma Rock.

Zuma Rock is a massive natural inselberg near Madalla, in Niger State, just west of Abuja along the road toward Kaduna. Although it is commonly associated with Nigeria’s capital, the rock is technically outside the Federal Capital Territory. Its striking vertical face and isolated position have made it one of Nigeria’s best-known landmarks.

Geologically, Zuma Rock is an igneous intrusion composed mainly of gabbro and granodiorite, dating to the Precambrian era. It rises about 725 metres above sea level and has roughly 300 metres of prominence. The rock is also depicted on Nigeria’s 100-naira banknote.

The main confusion is with Aso Rock, another famous landmark near Abuja. Aso Rock is closer to the city and is associated with Nigeria’s presidential complex, while Zuma Rock stands farther northwest in Niger State. The phrase “Gateway to Abuja” specifically points to Zuma Rock’s position on the approach from Suleja.
