What large inland delta in Botswana is a UNESCO World Heritage site? The answer is the Okavango Delta.
Unlike most deltas, the Okavango does not empty into a sea. The Okavango River flows from the Angolan highlands into Botswana’s dry Kalahari Basin, where the water spreads across a vast, remarkably flat wetland and is eventually lost mainly through evaporation and plant transpiration.
Its seasonal flood arrives during Botswana’s dry winter, usually peaking between June and August. This unusual timing concentrates wildlife around the waterways and islands, supporting elephants, hippos, lions, wild dogs, antelope and hundreds of bird species. The Moremi Game Reserve occupies part of the delta’s eastern side.
UNESCO inscribed the Okavango Delta in 2014 because it is an exceptionally intact inland delta ecosystem. A common mix-up is confusing it with the Okavango River: the river supplies the water, while the delta is the broad wetland it creates. The site was also the 1,000th property added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
