Quenya is the refined Elvish language that J.R.R. Tolkien created for Middle-earth.
Tolkien developed Quenya as part of his lifelong work in invented languages. It is associated especially with the High Elves, including the Ñoldor, and its sound and structure were influenced strongly by Finnish. Quenya appears in names, poems, ceremonial speech, and songs throughout Tolkien’s legendarium.
Quenya is often confused with Sindarin, another major Elvish language. Sindarin became the everyday language of many Elves in Beleriand and later Middle-earth, while Quenya had a more formal and historical status in much of the Third Age. Tolkien did not create either language as a complete conversational system in the same way as a modern natural language; instead, he developed extensive vocabulary, grammar, and historical relationships over many years.
