Quenya is the fictional language most closely associated with the High Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Tolkien developed Quenya as an Elvish language with influences from Finnish, Latin, and Greek, among other sources. Within the mythology, it is associated especially with the Ñoldor and other Elves who lived in Valinor or preserved the language in Middle-earth.
Quenya is not the same as Sindarin. Sindarin became the more commonly spoken Elvish language in much of Tolkien’s imagined history, while Quenya often had a formal, literary, or ceremonial role. Tolkien created grammar, vocabulary, sound patterns, and historical changes for both languages.
The name Quenya is sometimes translated or interpreted in connection with speech or language. Tolkien’s linguistic inventions were central to his creative method: he often imagined peoples and histories partly in order to give his languages a cultural setting.
