What Korean folk dance is traditionally performed during Chuseok celebrations?

The story behind the answer

Ganggangsullae is the Korean folk dance traditionally performed during Chuseok celebrations.

In the dance, women traditionally form a large circle, hold hands, sing, and move together. Performances are especially associated with the bright full moon of Chuseok, creating a communal spectacle rather than a solo performance.

Ganggangsullae originated in the southwestern coastal area of Korea and became particularly associated with Jeollanam-do. It has also been connected with women’s community gatherings and historical wartime narratives, although its exact origins are older and broader than any single story.

The dance was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. It should not be confused with Buchaechum, the Korean fan dance, or Talchum, masked dance drama.
