What kind of protective vehicle did Leonardo da Vinci design for soldiers?

Leonardo da Vinci designed an armored vehicle intended to protect soldiers while moving across a battlefield.

The concept, usually called Leonardo’s fighting vehicle, appears in a drawing from about 1487. It resembles a covered, conical wooden shell mounted on wheels. The sloping exterior was intended to deflect attacks, while openings around the sides allowed weapons to fire outward.

Leonardo imagined the vehicle being driven by people turning cranks inside it. The drawing shows a large number of guns arranged around the vehicle, but the design has a practical problem: the wheels and cranks appear to be arranged so that the machine would move in the wrong direction. Some historians think this was an error; others have suggested that Leonardo deliberately concealed or sabotaged the design.

The vehicle was never built as a Renaissance battlefield machine. Modern models demonstrate the general concept, but they should not be confused with a working tank. Its importance lies in combining armor, mobility, and concentrated firepower in one design.
